History

Wood shake and shingles have been a preferred roofing material for millions of American homes and buildings, because wood roofs:

Add warmth
Have a natural beauty
Maintain a handsome, rustic look
Can be periodically maintained without total replacement
Will breathe
Have excellent insulating qualities
Are lightweight (2.5 lbs per square foot)
Withstand extreme freeze / thaw conditions

Despite these advantages, there are some problems associated with wood roofs. These are:

Difficult to keep free of moss & fungus
Require annual maintenance
Prone to rain, sun damage & insect infestation which causes cupping, curling & cracking of shakes & shingles
Traditionally, shake and shingle wood roof maintenance has fallen into two categories.

The first is owners who perform periodic maintenance by replacement of damaged shakes or shingles and pressure-washing the roof every five years or so to control moss, fungus and debris build-up, depending on the climate. This process adds a few years to the life of the roof.

The second consists of owners who clean, repair and have chemicals applied every four to five years that act as a substitute for the natural oils and protectants, which can extend the life 30-50%, along with proper annual maintenance.
